Another burger bust plan B... Veselka, being closed for like the first time in a million years led us to this near by steakhouse. Our other east village options didn't get many last minute votes amongst us, too fast food like, no beer, too much beer, too far... Dr. Sannwich recalled this central village place that had come up in past burger discussions.

After a short westward walk from our original destination, the Knickerbocker greeted us like an old friend. The saloon-like room with above average aged clientele filled me with thoughts of the early bird crowd, blue plate specials, liver and onions... although there is nothing cheap about the prices here, a serious T-bone steak, caviar pie, yellow-fin tuna tartar tacos, bbq St. Louis ribs. Well we weren't here for steak or todays special, we were here to order off the menu.

You won't find Hamburgers on the menu at Knickerbocker. Not sure why this is, but they don't get offended if 6 of you all order them... I guess that's because for $14 you're not just a cheap date or some tourist getting your fill of free bread. The price is a bit high, but at least they don't charge extra for cheese, fries or fixings... you can also get bacon for no extra charge. The patty on this guy is no lightweight, would guess that it tips 1/2 lb. You get a full plate for your money. The burger here is a good looking dude, nice grill (broiler) toasted marks on the bun... thin red onion... tomato... not too overwhelming green leaf lettuce. So not a bad start. But looks aren't everything.

The meat was seasoned and mine was cooked well, but perhaps a bit too lean for the full effect. The cheese choices are nice, went with cheddar, but felt it was thrown onto the patty a bit late and didn't have the ideal melt. Overall the burger was above average, but not top ten, a bit too big, and the good looking bread over takes the meat at times. I'm glad I ate at the Knickbocker instead of settling for a fast food style burger tonight. And although the price of the burger is a bit high, we didn't break the bank... about $21 for the all inclusive cheeseburger, beer, tax and tip.

Oh yeah, the onion rings were awesome... tell them Rain... nice and thin like an onion loaf but not stuck together like a loaf... the fries are good and skinny too. I said loaf.

How could i agree more with the Sicko BurgerSeeker?....everything is true, i can attest. From the visual excitment to the first bite and subsequent slight (but refrained) disappointment. Knicks is your place to take your out-of-town distant family or whoever is in desperate need of a Craker Barrel ambiance in the hood.
I will easily forget this burger. This is a B+.

What more to comment on really. The place had a classic New York apeal, not the kind you get from the dinner out in queens or real deal Irish Pub in Hells Kitchen, this place was strait from the 60's. Drawn from the model of Palm, or Sardi's, the old framed posters, the brasss railling, the dim woody ambiance, charming indeed. Now lest talk about the burger.....

Beautiful char, nice (but bulky) bun, all the fixins nicely set to the side for your own construction, and as burgerseeker mentioned, a pleasant selection of cheese. Mine also with the cheddar not fully melted. The cook was a bit over, but not enough to ruin the burger. Large and satisfying, but no real uniquely distinguishable quality's. I prefer a bit more fat in my meat to give it a little more tenderness, and a little less chew. Tasty burger. Gave it a
B+, mainly because I liked the place. Fell right in between a B and a B+ but I decided to be generous today.

The wholesome burger with a added bonus of a woodpaneled, pleather boothed, senior citizen establishment that felt more like it was a dolled up diner in the midwest rather than located a hop jump and a skip away from the New School.

Loved the digs.

Burger was nice - garlicy, toppings were lovely. Yet, the meat was not as flavorful as I would have liked. The cut did not stand out as much as some of my favorite establishments. Also - bun was a bit too dense and not as porous as I would have liked. However, it was really pleasant. I would go back for sure and ask for a rare burger with a side order of onion rings.
