I've heard about this place many times before in conversations about places to go when in the hood and also on some burger lists... so it only made sense to go here after we saw the taping of the Daily Show a couple aves. away. Well, that and also the fact that Island Burger up the street doesn't serve beer... they don't, right?
Uncle Nick's is a Greek joint. I didn't look at the menu cause I knew that I would, duh, want a burger. After ordering my cheeseburger medium rare to our waiter, I got this soup nazi-like stare... 'we don't have burger like diner' he said. I was fine with that, but I still want a cheeseburger... 'have you looked at menu?'... um, you have a burger right? 'we have hamburger deluxe.' uh, yeah, like i said, i'll have the 'hamburger deluxe' medium rare please... I guess the confusion was my wanting cheese... they don't do cheese here, unless you want to settle for fetta. Not today thanks.
After placing my order, I couldn't help but feel like the dork who goes to Peter Luger's and asks about the fish. I suppose they don't get many requests for the burger here or something... yeah, I felt like a dork for not getting the Flaming Saganaki, or Moussaka. I hear the Greek food here is the bomb... next time. But this time it was all about my duty to the burger, and I got over my guilt.
The burgers... my plate had the standard items on it, lettuce, tomato, and red onion... minus my cheese of course. I was immediately taken back by the bun to patty ratio. I wouldn't say the patty was too small, but rather the bun was way too big. The lettuce was also a bit misshapen... look at the third photo... that fragment is all i got for lettuce. OK, so first impressions not so good. After I dressed my dude up with all the fixings on my plate, it was time for the true test. Well, right after I got through that first bite of bun. Next bite, this time I hit beef. Tastee! Not bad.
Interesting use of some spices... but not overwhelming. I like you Greek burger. Cooked right, juice present, and a nice texture... could have used a little more char, but not bad. The fries were seasoned well too, although a bit to thick and soggy for my liking. So the Uncle came through on his burger, kinda like a good ground kebab sandwich. I would say this guy is better than most non-burger style restaurants, but not as good as those who we have come to know as Burger Joints. If you find yourself in Uncle's hood, go with the Greek food.
