I beg the pardon of our New York City based hosts, but the best chain nationwide has to be Corpus Christi-based Whataburger. They have 500 units found mostly along the I10 corridor, and the best consistency of product from Phoenix to Jacksonville. 5" patty, slightly salty in flavor, toasted bun, available from single to triple.
It fills the bottomless pit of my gut like no other. Fries and onion rings available, good shakes, and an apple pie very similar to McDonalds' old fried pie.
24 hour service in most locations I've seen.
It is a great burger, similarly priced to Burger King's Whopper offerings.
For value and execution on the independent scene, try Jim's Ambest truck stop in Cheektowaga, NY, across from the Galleria mall.
Just a couple I haven't seen.
