On a recommendation from two of our fine BurgerFans, I visited this Columbia U. mainstay for a pre Central Park Gates lunch. A good looking place with the usual historic diner photos on the walls and a nice (ny sized) counter for the two of us to sit at.

I was excited to eat a burger and have the rest of the afternoon to walk it off. I went as always with a medium rare cheese burger (swiss) deluxe style. My copilot had the same but opted for the garlic spread instead of cheese ( a bit overpowering, but tasty). He also ordered a vanilla milk-shake. I don't normally get shakes, but if you do, they make a good shake.

My plate arrived... photos can give you most of the visuals, but one thing i noticed was that this guy wasn't as thick as the other burgers i've tried so far at the pubs. A think burger isn't always a better burger though, as the good people of California know. I cut this guy in half not that it needed it to help with eating (like thick burgers), I needed to see the inner makings of what I was about to chow on. Toppings (red onion, tomatoes, and lettuce), check - Juice, check - Sesame bun, check. The fries were great. Dark thin and crisp.

So how did it taste? Well, pretty good. Good amount of juice and seasoning. Held together well. But unfortunately the texture of the meat had some room for improvement. Not sure if it was due to too much fat or if this patty was not as fresh as a great burger should be (although as Rare showed us, fresh doesn't always mean good).

This guy is a good lunch burger for the price... I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if you live near here or are ever in the hood, it's a nice neighborhood diner to check out.
