I wish I had a picture to put up here on the site...that is in the works...I will do my best to get one up asap...
Houston's is the real deal....
Let me begin this by saying before I began my burger quest after also reading the Time Out NY article, the burger at Houston's was the best I ever had...ever.
To start off the burger is flame broiled. It is hand packed, that you can tell because if you get it rare enough, it will crumble right out of the bun. The meat has a great flame broiled flavor but it is not overwhelming, just tasty. The key is to order it rare to medium rare. The burger is always crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. I've made quite a mess but that also might be due to the fact that I use extravagant amounts of ketchup. They take food seriously at Houstons, especially meat, so I suggest their ribs as well.
The burger comes surved on a toasted on the inside, egg roll with sesame seeds on it. Always soft and fresh. The roll is buttered on both sides and this, my friends, is half the battle of deliciousness.
The burger, if you do not say otherwise, will come with mayo and mustard on it. Personally, I am not a fan of either on my burger so I request that it come plain.
Also, you must get a cheeseburger. There is no question here. The cheese they give you is cheddar, though they have others at your request. It is always melted and one with the juicy burger.
Here is a small touch that only a place like Houstons could pull off and only a place like Houstons would really try. On the bottom of the burger, which you will not even notice if you don't look for it, there is a thin layer of what I think is cabbage....now this might sound really odd and out of place...but trust me...its sweet, crisp and you don't really notice it there in between the juicy, butter, cheesey burger.
The burger comes with lettuce, tomato, diced onion (all fresh and top quality) and fries on the side. All on the same plate.
The fries at Houston's are out of this world. If you are lucky enough to get a fresh order, you will be in your element. The fries are crisp and very thin but still manage to have a good amount of potato inside of them. Perfect.
There are three Houston's locations in New York.
East 53rd street and 3rd avenue in the Citigroup building.
Park Avenue South and I believe 27th street.
Roosevelt Field Mall in Carle Place, Long Island
The burger is more expensive in the city than in Long Island.
$15 in the city and $13 on the island. Don't fret, drinks are unlimited free refills.
Enjoy. Let me know what you think.
