After comparing the various "Best Of" list's in Austin I settled on Hut's for my first stop on the burger tour. Hut's recieved the #1 burger on both Citysearch's top ten and the local Austin Chronicle. Naturally I figured I would be in good hands here in Texas for if not for anything else, the meat will be prime. Well, the meat was good here, unfortunitely, everything else was a complete disaster.
The menu offers a variety of toppings which confused me slightly. There was at least 10 options some with lettuce tomatoe some with out and in the end I made the wrong choice by selecting a burger with jalepenos and a cajun seasoning. This was joined by and overflowing salad of chopped iceburg lettuce, tomato and onion, soggy pickle chips, shredded chedder, and way too much mustard. Not quite what I was expecting. My thinking was that since I was in Texas, might as well get a little spice on my burger. Who knew such a monstrosity would arive. It had a vocanic look to it as the toppings overflowed from the tower of bun. Very poor visual aesthetics.
Thankfully it didn't taste that bad, it just didn't really taste like a burger. The meat was fresh, tasty and cooked perfectly med rare as I had asked, but I couln't really taste the nuances of the beef because the cajun spices encrusted all over the meat was consuming this nice looking patty. I blame myself for the mishap but jeez, the veg condiment thing shure wasn't my fault, nor was the bun. The bread was simply bad. The texture had a starchy chew almost like caurdboard. An industrial bread of sorts. Aparently they never learned how to properly back bread in Texas, but there are no handicaps in BurgerClub. Hut buddy, get it together.
I did mannage to sample a bite of my friends simple mustard pickle onion burger which allowed the meat to come out and thankfully join the party, but still far too much condiment, and the bread is just a sad thing. If his burger was a b-, mine was shurly a C. If assembled correctly I believe this burger could make a B.
The place itself is pretty cool. Old baseball penants fill the wall's along with an assortment of american decerative kitch. The service is friendly. The price's are cheap, portions large (this is Texas after all) and the fries and onion rings were both poor. Sorry Hut's, your not really up to snuff.
